Delphinium pentagynum

Delphinium pentagynum is an uncommon plant that flowers around May to July. It’s one of two species of Delphinium that can be found growing wild in Gibraltar, the other being Delphinium (Consolida) ambiguum, found in abundance along the lower parts of the East Sand Slopes.

Delphinium pentagynum can be found growing out of damp crevices on the rock, dispersed around Douglas Path, Mediterranean Steps, Charles V Road, Inglis Way and Royal Anglian Way in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.

Delphiniums, commonly known as Larkspurs, are a member of the Buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) widely cultivated as ornamentals– featuring in flower bouquets and gardens around the world. Its name stems from the Greek word delphínion, meaning Dolphin, in reference to the shape of its flowers.
